When evaluating DAM systems for purchase, there are many features that should be on your must-have list: search filtering, bulk asset upload, reporting, collections \u2013 these are the features that separate a DAM from plain old storage. A comprehensive requirements list accommodating these features is a must before beginning your review of vendor offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are OTHER features that sound attractive, but may not actually provide value, or worse, may compete with existing systems. Here is my list of those items:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Editing Capability<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are occasions when an asset may need to be edited to meet the needs of the end user, but I would advise against doing any image or video editing from within a DAM. There are better tools that are specifically designed for that (like Adobe Photoshop or Premiere Pro). A built-in tool may sound convenient, but you will quickly encounter limitations with the editing capabilities within the DAM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Workflow<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Workflow is defined as an automated process that moves information and assets from one user (like creation) to another user (like approval). JIRA, CFlow, or some other workflow tool may already exist within your organization, and I would leverage the existing tool to accommodate your approval process. Issues could arise from asking approvers and reviewers to use multiple workflow tools. If your organization does not currently have a workflow tool, however, this feature may come in handy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CMS Back-end<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A content management system or CMS (like Adobe Experience Manager or WordPress) that automates the development and maintenance of a website, requires a central location for asset storage. Certainly, there is an advantage to leveraging your DAM as a back end to your content management system, eliminating additional handling. And if this is a hard requirement, you may only want to evaluate DAMs that have that capability. However, if you do not use a CMS, this feature does not add value.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
